What it is and what it is for
Musculoskeletal ultrasound lets us look at muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints, with the advantage of being able to study them in movement. It is very useful for pain that won't go away, tendinitis, bursitis, effusions and sports injuries.
Which parts can be examined
Shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand, hip, knee, ankle and foot, as well as muscles and tendons in general. Your doctor's referral states the area to study; if you have any doubts, call me and we'll check together.
When to have it
Shoulder or knee pain lasting for weeks, a suspected strain or tendinitis, a sports trauma: these are all situations where this exam helps understand what is happening, quickly and without radiation.
How it works and preparation
No preparation is needed. I examine the area by placing the probe with a little gel, sometimes asking you to move the joint to assess it better. No needles, no radiation. At the end I give you the report and explain what was found.

Can ultrasound see fractures?
Ultrasound shows tendons, muscles, ligaments and the surface of the bone well, but not the inside of the bone. If a fracture is suspected, the first exam is usually an X-ray.
How long does it take?
About 15–20 minutes for a single joint; up to 30 if the scan is more complex or covers more than one area.
Should I remove creams, jewellery or bandages?
Avoid creams, ointments or oils on the area to be examined on the day of the scan, and remove rings, bracelets or your watch if the area is the hand or wrist. Simple bandages are removed at the practice; prescribed braces or dressings should only be removed if the doctor who prescribed them agrees.
