What it is for

Studies the flexor and extensor tendons, the median nerve at the carpal tunnel, and the bursae and joints of the wrist and hand. Indicated for suspected carpal tunnel syndrome, tenosynovitis, overload pain or trauma.

Why it is done

Useful for tingling and numbness in the fingers (suspected carpal tunnel), tendon pain or after trauma.

How it works

Hand and wrist resting, gel on the skin. Sometimes you bend or straighten your fingers.

We look at the tendons, the median nerve at the carpal tunnel, and the bursae and joints of the wrist and hand.

Is any preparation needed?

No. This scan needs no fasting and no preparation. If you have previous reports or scans, bring them with you: they help to compare and follow any change over time.

No, it is painless. The probe is placed on the skin with a little gel. It uses ultrasound, not radiation: it is safe and can be repeated as often as needed, including during pregnancy and in children.
