What it is and what it is for

The thyroid is a small gland at the base of the neck that regulates metabolism. Thyroid ultrasound lets us look at its shape, size and structure and detect any nodules, assessing their number, size and features. It is the reference exam for checking the thyroid because it is accurate, safe and repeatable over time.

When to have it

It is useful when your doctor finds a nodule or an abnormality, when thyroid hormone levels are abnormal, for a swelling or discomfort in the neck, or simply as a routine check if you already have a thyroid condition to monitor or a family history of thyroid disease.

How it works

You lie down and I place the probe on your neck with a little gel. Nothing more is needed: no needles, no radiation, no discomfort. The exam is complete in a few minutes.

Is any preparation needed?

No. Thyroid ultrasound needs no fasting and no preparation. If you have previous tests or scans, bring them with you: they help with comparison and following changes over time.

What I check

I assess the size and structure of the gland, the presence and features of any nodules and of the neck lymph nodes. At the end I give you the report and explain in plain words what was found and whether further checks are needed.

Frequently asked questions

Does thyroid ultrasound hurt?

No, it is painless. The probe is placed on the neck with a little gel. It uses ultrasound waves, not radiation: it is safe and can be repeated without any issue.

Is fasting or preparation needed?

No. You can eat and drink normally before the exam: no preparation is required.

Does the ultrasound detect thyroid nodules?

Yes. I assess the presence, number, size and features of nodules, as well as the structure of the gland. If needed, I guide further investigation.

Do I need a doctor's referral?

For a private exam it is not required. If you have a referral, bring it with you along with any previous scans.

How long does it take and when do I get the report?

A few minutes. At the end I give you the report and explain what was found.
