Shoulder ultrasound

What it is for

Assesses the rotator cuff, the supraspinatus tendon, the subacromial bursa and the long head of the biceps. Requested for pain when raising or abducting the arm, suspected tendinopathy or rotator cuff tear, subacromial bursitis or trauma.

Why it is done

You have it if it hurts to raise your arm, after trauma, or if you suspect inflammation or an injury to the shoulder.

How it works

Gel on the shoulder; sometimes you move your arm as directed. The probe passes in front of and to the side of the shoulder.

What I check

We assess the rotator cuff tendons, the bursa under the acromion and the biceps tendon.

Frequently asked questions

Does the shoulder ultrasound hurt?

No, it is painless. The probe is placed on the skin with a little gel. It uses ultrasound, not radiation: it is safe and can be repeated as often as needed, including during pregnancy and in children.

The scan usually takes a few minutes. At the end I hand you the written report and explain in plain words what was found and whether further checks are needed.
