What it is for
Analyses subcutaneous swellings, cysts, lipomas, haematomas and superficial fluid collections. Useful for a palpable lump of uncertain origin, a suspected cyst or a post-traumatic lesion; it helps distinguish fluid from solid lesions.
Why it is done
You have it if you feel a lump under the skin and the doctor wants to understand whether it is a cyst, a lipoma, a haematoma or something else.
How it works
Gel is applied to the area of the swelling and the probe is gently moved over it. It usually takes 15–20 minutes.

We look at whether the lesion is fluid-filled or solid, where it is and how large it is.
Is any preparation needed?
No. This scan needs no fasting and no preparation. If you have previous reports or scans, bring them with you: they help to compare and follow any change over time.

Frequently asked questions
Can a haematoma be seen after an injury?
Yes. A haematoma is a collection of blood in the soft tissues after an injury. Ultrasound shows its position, size and the appearance of its contents, which change over time as it is reabsorbed; this is why a follow-up scan is sometimes needed.
Should I bring X-rays or MRI scans I have already had?
Yes, if you have them. Comparing with previous exams shows how things have changed and helps focus the ultrasound on the right spot.
Can it tell whether it is a cyst or a lipoma?
Ultrasound clearly distinguishes a fluid collection, such as a cyst, from a solid lump, and describes its position and size. In many cases, such as a lipoma, the appearance is typical; when it is not, the report suggests the appropriate further tests.
Why is the side that does not hurt sometimes checked too?
Because comparing with the healthy side helps to tell whether a difference is significant. If needed I do it during the same appointment, at no extra cost.
Does it hurt?
No, ultrasound does not hurt. It is a painless exam: the probe glides over the skin with a little gel. In some cases the pressure of the probe may cause slight discomfort, for example on an area that is already inflamed, on a very full bladder or on a painful joint. In rare situations, such as appendicitis, the scan may be more uncomfortable, but these cases are rare and the pressure is adapted to what you can tolerate. If you feel pain, tell me: we stop straight away.
Should I avoid creams or ointments?
Yes, avoid creams or ointments on the lump on the day of the scan and wear clothes that let you uncover it easily.
