What it is and what it is for
Abdominal ultrasound lets us look at the internal organs and assess their shape, size and structure. It is useful for checking the liver and biliary tract (including gallstones), the pancreas, the spleen, the kidneys and the bladder, and to investigate abdominal pain, abnormal blood tests or routine check-ups.
Upper, lower or complete abdomen
The upper abdomen examines the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen and kidneys; the lower abdomen the bladder and pelvic organs; the complete abdomen includes both. Your doctor's referral usually states which one is needed; if you have any doubts, call me and we'll check together.
How to prepare
Preparation depends on the exam:
- Upper or complete abdomen: fast for 6-8 hours (so the gallbladder and organs are seen more clearly).
- Lower abdomen / pelvis: full bladder — drink about a litre of water one hour before and do not urinate until the exam.

How it works
You lie down and I place the probe on your abdomen with a little gel. No needles, no radiation, no discomfort. In a few minutes the exam is complete and I give you the report, explaining in plain words what was found.

Do I need to fast?
For the upper or complete abdomen, yes — fast for 6-8 hours. For the lower abdomen a full bladder is needed instead.
What is the difference between upper, lower and complete?

Does the exam hurt or use radiation?
No: it is painless and uses ultrasound waves, not radiation. It is safe and repeatable.
Do I need a doctor's referral?
For a private exam it is not required. If you have one, bring it along with any previous scans.
