What it is for
Assesses the kidneys, ureters, bladder and post-void residual urine. Prescribed for renal colic, blood in the urine, recurrent urinary infections, suspected obstruction of the urinary tract or monitoring of known kidney disease.

You have it if you have renal colic, blood in the urine, frequent urinary infections, or your doctor suspects an obstruction to the flow of urine.
How it works
First we look with a full bladder; then, if needed, we ask you to urinate and check how much urine remains in the bladder. Gel on the abdomen or flank.

We assess the kidneys, ureters and bladder, and measure any urine left after voiding.
Is any preparation needed?
Yes: you need to arrive with a full bladder. Drink about a litre of water an hour before and do not go to the toilet until the scan: a full bladder acts as a window onto the pelvic organs.
How much it costs

Does the urinary tract ultrasound hurt?
No, it is painless. The probe is placed on the skin with a little gel. It uses ultrasound, not radiation: it is safe and can be repeated as often as needed, including during pregnancy and in children.
Is any preparation needed?

Do I need a referral from my doctor?

The scan usually takes a few minutes. At the end I hand you the written report and explain in plain words what was found and whether further checks are needed.
