What it is for
Assesses the shape and flow of the abdominal aorta and the common iliac arteries. Indicated for follow-up of an aneurysm, suspected aortic dilation or known abdominal vascular disease.
Why it is done
You have it to monitor a known aneurysm, a dilation of the aorta or diseases of the vessels in the abdomen.
How it works
Lying on your back, gel on the abdomen. The Doppler probe shows the blood flow in the aorta.

Is any preparation needed?
Yes: fasting for 6-8 hours is recommended, because a full stomach and bowel gas hide the liver, gallbladder and pancreas. You may drink water and take your usual medication. Bring any previous scans with you.

Frequently asked questions
I have a known aneurysm: what is the check for?
An abdominal aortic aneurysm is a permanent widening of the aorta, usually defined as a diameter of 3 cm or more. The check measures the maximum diameter and compares it with previous scans: bring your reports with you. How often checks are needed depends on the diameter and is decided by the specialist.
Are the iliac arteries assessed too?
Yes. The common iliac arteries are the two branches into which the aorta divides (aortic bifurcation) in the lower abdomen: their size and flow are assessed.
Are needles or contrast dye used?
No. Only the probe is placed on the skin with a little gel: no injections, no contrast dye, no radiation.
How often should the check be repeated?
It depends on the findings and on each person’s situation: the report or your doctor will say. As it uses no radiation, it can be repeated as often as needed.
Why is fasting needed for a scan of the blood vessels?
Because the abdominal aorta and renal arteries lie deep, behind the bowel: bowel gas, which increases after meals, can hide them. They are seen better on an empty stomach.
Does it hurt?
No, ultrasound does not hurt. It is a painless exam: the probe glides over the skin with a little gel. In some cases the pressure of the probe may cause slight discomfort, for example on an area that is already inflamed, on a very full bladder or on a painful joint. In rare situations, such as appendicitis, the scan may be more uncomfortable, but these cases are rare and the pressure is adapted to what you can tolerate. If you feel pain, tell me: we stop straight away.
How long does an aortic Doppler take?
Usually 15–20 minutes: the diameter of the aorta is measured at several points, from just below the diaphragm down to the iliac arteries, and its flow is assessed.
Should I avoid creams or wear anything in particular?
Avoid creams or oils on your abdomen on the day of the scan and wear comfortable clothes that let you uncover your abdomen easily.
