Lower abdominal ultrasound in Pozzallo

What it is for
Explores the kidneys, bladder, prostate (suprapubic), large pelvic vessels and pelvic bowel. Useful for lower abdominal pain, microscopic blood in the urine, recurrent urinary infections, urinary retention or suspected kidney and bladder disease.

Useful for lower abdominal pain, burning or recurrent urinary infections, difficulty urinating or blood in the urine.
How it works
You lie down and gel is applied to the lower abdomen. The probe passes over the bladder and pelvic area.

We look at the kidneys, bladder, prostate (in men, from above the pubic bone) and the pelvic structures in that area.
Is any preparation needed?
Yes: you need to arrive with a full bladder. Drink about a litre of water an hour before and do not go to the toilet until the scan: a full bladder acts as a window onto the pelvic organs.

Frequently asked questions
I have recurrent urinary infections: is the ultrasound useful?
It can be, on your doctor’s advice. The kidneys and bladder are assessed for conditions that favour infections: hydronephrosis (dilation of the kidney’s collecting system), stones, a high post-void residual (urine left in the bladder after voiding) or bladder diverticula. It is not needed in every case.
How does it differ from an upper abdominal ultrasound?
The lower abdomen covers the kidneys, bladder, prostate in men and pelvic organs, and needs a full bladder. The upper abdomen covers the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas and spleen, and needs fasting.
I have already had a CT or MRI scan: is the ultrasound still useful?
It depends on the clinical question. Ultrasound is often used for follow-up checks because it is quick and radiation-free. Bring the reports and images of previous exams with you: comparing them makes the ultrasound more useful.
In men, is the prostate also seen?
Yes, from above the pubic bone and with a full bladder: the size and general appearance of the prostate are assessed. If a more detailed study is needed, your doctor may recommend other tests.
Does it hurt?
No, ultrasound does not hurt. It is a painless exam: the probe glides over the skin with a little gel. In some cases the pressure of the probe may cause slight discomfort, for example on an area that is already inflamed, on a very full bladder or on a painful joint. In rare situations, such as appendicitis, the scan may be more uncomfortable, but these cases are rare and the pressure is adapted to what you can tolerate. If you feel pain, tell me: we stop straight away.
How long does a lower abdominal ultrasound take?
About 15–20 minutes with a full bladder; a few minutes more if the bladder needs checking after urinating.
Should I avoid creams or wear anything in particular?
Avoid creams or oils on your abdomen on the day of the scan and wear comfortable clothes that let you uncover your abdomen easily.
