What it is for
Assesses the superficial lymph nodes (neck, armpits, groin) for size, shape and internal structure. Requested for a persistent palpable lymph node, fever or reactive inflammation, follow-up of known disease or suspected lymphadenopathy.
Why it is done
You have it if you notice a swelling or an enlarged lymph node that does not go away, in case of persistent fever, or to check lymph nodes already known.
How it works
Gel is applied to the area (neck, armpit or groin) and the probe is gently moved over it.

Is any preparation needed?
No. This scan needs no fasting and no preparation. If you have previous reports or scans, bring them with you: they help to compare and follow any change over time.

Frequently asked questions
Which lymph node areas can be checked?
The superficial ones: the sides of the neck (cervical nodes), the armpits (axillary nodes) and the groin (inguinal nodes). Usually the area indicated by your doctor, or where you feel the swelling, is examined, compared if needed with the other side.
If I have had a lymph node ultrasound before, should I bring it?
Yes. Comparing size, shape and internal structure over time (in particular the hilum, the central part of the node) is one of the main elements in interpreting the scan: previous reports make it more useful.
Is an enlarged lymph node always a problem?
No. Lymph nodes very often enlarge in response to common infections, such as a sore throat. Ultrasound assesses their shape, size and structure; the report states whether a follow-up check is enough or further tests are needed.
When is a lymph node ultrasound worth doing?
When a lymph node remains palpable over time, or on your doctor’s advice to monitor a known condition. If you are unsure which exam to book, call us.
Does it hurt?
No, ultrasound does not hurt. It is a painless exam: the probe glides over the skin with a little gel. In some cases the pressure of the probe may cause slight discomfort, for example on an area that is already inflamed, on a very full bladder or on a painful joint. In rare situations, such as appendicitis, the scan may be more uncomfortable, but these cases are rare and the pressure is adapted to what you can tolerate. If you feel pain, tell me: we stop straight away.
How long does a lymph node ultrasound take?
About 15–20 minutes; up to 30 if many lymph node areas need to be studied.
Should I remove creams or jewellery?
Avoid creams and deodorants on the area to be examined, for example the armpits, and remove necklaces or jewellery if the area is the neck.
