What it is for
Studies the testicles, epididymis and spermatic cord. Requested for scrotal pain or swelling, a palpable lump, trauma, suspected testicular torsion (emergency), varicocele, hydrocele, orchitis/epididymitis or investigation of male infertility.

Useful for pain or swelling of the testicles, a lump you can feel, trauma, or checks related to varicocele, hydrocele or infertility.
How it works
You lie down. Gel is applied to the scrotum and the probe is passed gently. Any acute pain should be reported straight away.

We assess the testicles, epididymis and spermatic cord, looking for causes of pain, swelling or lumps.
Is any preparation needed?
No. This scan needs no fasting and no preparation. If you have previous reports or scans, bring them with you: they help to compare and follow any change over time.

Does the scrotal and testicular ultrasound hurt?
No, it is painless. The probe is placed on the skin with a little gel. It uses ultrasound, not radiation: it is safe and can be repeated as often as needed, including during pregnancy and in children.

Do I need a referral from my doctor?

The scan usually takes a few minutes. At the end I hand you the written report and explain in plain words what was found and whether further checks are needed.
