What it is for
Studies the testicles, epididymis and spermatic cord. Requested for scrotal pain or swelling, a palpable lump, trauma, suspected testicular torsion (emergency), varicocele, hydrocele, orchitis/epididymitis or investigation of male infertility.

Useful for pain or swelling of the testicles, a lump you can feel, trauma, or checks related to varicocele, hydrocele or infertility.
How it works
You lie down. Gel is applied to the scrotum and the probe is passed gently. Any acute pain should be reported straight away.

We assess the testicles, epididymis and spermatic cord, looking for causes of pain, swelling or lumps.
Is any preparation needed?
No. This scan needs no fasting and no preparation. If you have previous reports or scans, bring them with you: they help to compare and follow any change over time.

Frequently asked questions
When should I go straight away, without waiting?
If the pain came on suddenly and is severe, perhaps with swelling and nausea, do not book: go to the emergency department. It may be testicular torsion, a condition in which hours really matter.
Is any preparation needed?
None. No fasting and no full bladder. It is done lying down and usually takes 10–20 minutes.
I have noticed a swelling: what can be told apart?
Ultrasound distinguishes well between the most common causes: epididymal cysts, hydrocele, varicocele and solid lumps of the testicle. This distinction is what decides whether a follow-up check is enough or further tests are needed, and we know it at the end of the scan.
Does it hurt?
No, ultrasound does not hurt. It is a painless exam: the probe glides over the skin with a little gel. In some cases the pressure of the probe may cause slight discomfort, for example on an area that is already inflamed, on a very full bladder or on a painful joint. In rare situations, such as appendicitis, the scan may be more uncomfortable, but these cases are rare and the pressure is adapted to what you can tolerate. If you feel pain, tell me: we stop straight away.
