What it is for
Suprapubic examination of the bladder and prostate. Indicated for urinary symptoms (weak stream, frequent urination, waking at night), suspected benign prostatic enlargement, assessment of post-void residual urine or urological follow-up; requires an adequately full bladder.
Why it is done
Useful if you urinate often, with a weak stream, get up at night to urinate, or your doctor suspects an enlarged prostate.
How it works
It is important to arrive with a reasonably full bladder. You lie down, gel on the lower abdomen, the probe above the pubic bone.

Is any preparation needed?
Yes: you need to arrive with a full bladder. Drink about a litre of water an hour before and do not go to the toilet until the scan: a full bladder acts as a window onto the pelvic organs.

Frequently asked questions
Can the prostate be seen with the probe on the abdomen?
Yes, with the suprapubic (transabdominal) approach: the full bladder acts as an acoustic window and allows the prostate volume to be estimated and its general appearance assessed. For a detailed study of its internal structure there are dedicated exams, such as transrectal ultrasound or MRI, on the urologist’s advice.
What if my bladder is not full enough?
With an under-filled bladder the scan is not reliable. Usually you drink more water and the scan is repeated once the bladder has filled, typically after 30–60 minutes; if this is not possible, a new appointment is arranged.
Does the ultrasound replace blood and urine tests?
No. Ultrasound shows the shape and size of the organs; blood and urine tests describe how they work. They are complementary and doctors often request them together.
Why is the bladder also checked after urinating?
To measure how much urine remains in the bladder after urinating, the so-called post-void residual. A high residual may indicate that the bladder does not empty properly, for example because of an enlarged prostate.
Does it hurt?
No, ultrasound does not hurt. It is a painless exam: the probe glides over the skin with a little gel. In some cases the pressure of the probe may cause slight discomfort, for example on an area that is already inflamed, on a very full bladder or on a painful joint. In rare situations, such as appendicitis, the scan may be more uncomfortable, but these cases are rare and the pressure is adapted to what you can tolerate. If you feel pain, tell me: we stop straight away.
How long does a bladder and prostate ultrasound take?
About 10–15 minutes, including the post-void residual measurement after you have urinated.
Should I avoid creams or wear anything in particular?
Avoid creams or oils on your abdomen on the day of the scan and wear comfortable clothes that let you uncover your abdomen easily.
