What it is for
Studies the flow and any narrowing of the renal arteries. Indicated for high blood pressure of renovascular origin, known or suspected stenosis, or follow-up after renal vascular procedures.

Useful if you have high blood pressure that is hard to control and the doctor suspects a problem with the renal arteries.
How it works
You lie down, gel on the flank and abdomen. Doppler probe over the kidneys: you will hear the sound of the flow.

Is any preparation needed?
Yes: fasting for 6-8 hours is recommended, because a full stomach and bowel gas hide the liver, gallbladder and pancreas. You may drink water and take your usual medication. Bring any previous scans with you.

Frequently asked questions
Why are the renal arteries checked if I have high blood pressure?
Because a stenosis (narrowing) of a renal artery can cause renovascular hypertension, high blood pressure due to reduced blood flow to the kidney, often hard to control with medication. The Doppler measures blood velocity in the artery: a marked increase at the narrowing is the sign of stenosis.
What is the sound I hear during the scan?
It is the Doppler signal: the machine turns the speed of the blood in the vessel into sound, and the pitch changes with the speed of the flow. It is normal and part of the assessment.
How often should the check be repeated?
It depends on the findings and on each person’s situation: the report or your doctor will say. As it uses no radiation, it can be repeated as often as needed.
Why is fasting needed for a scan of the blood vessels?
Because the abdominal aorta and renal arteries lie deep, behind the bowel: bowel gas, which increases after meals, can hide them. They are seen better on an empty stomach.
What is the difference between ultrasound and Doppler ultrasound?
Doppler ultrasound is an ultrasound that, in addition to the image of the vessels, shows the blood flow: its direction and speed. It helps to find narrowings, dilations or obstacles to blood flow.
Does it hurt?
No, ultrasound does not hurt. It is a painless exam: the probe glides over the skin with a little gel. In some cases the pressure of the probe may cause slight discomfort, for example on an area that is already inflamed, on a very full bladder or on a painful joint. In rare situations, such as appendicitis, the scan may be more uncomfortable, but these cases are rare and the pressure is adapted to what you can tolerate. If you feel pain, tell me: we stop straight away.
How long does a renal artery Doppler take?
Usually 20–30 minutes: for each kidney, blood velocity is measured along the renal artery and inside the kidney itself.
Should I avoid creams or wear anything in particular?
Avoid creams or oils on your abdomen on the day of the scan and wear comfortable clothes that let you uncover your abdomen easily.
