What it is for
Assesses the arteries and veins of the arms and forearms. Indicated for asymmetric swelling or oedema, suspected upper-limb venous thrombosis, haemodialysis fistulas or changes in peripheral arterial flow.
Why it is done
Useful if one arm is swollen compared with the other, suspected thrombosis, a dialysis fistula or problems with arterial flow.

Arm resting, gel and Doppler probe along the arteries and veins.

We look at the arteries and veins of the arm and whether the blood flow is normal.
Is any preparation needed?
No. This scan needs no fasting and no preparation. If you have previous reports or scans, bring them with you: they help to compare and follow any change over time.

Does the upper-limb doppler ultrasound hurt?
No, it is painless. The probe is placed on the skin with a little gel. It uses ultrasound, not radiation: it is safe and can be repeated as often as needed, including during pregnancy and in children.

Do I need a referral from my doctor?
