What it is for
Assesses the arteries and veins of the arms and forearms. Indicated for asymmetric swelling or oedema, suspected upper-limb venous thrombosis, haemodialysis fistulas or changes in peripheral arterial flow.

Useful if one arm is swollen compared with the other, suspected thrombosis, a dialysis fistula or problems with arterial flow.

Is any preparation needed?
No. This scan needs no fasting and no preparation. If you have previous reports or scans, bring them with you: they help to compare and follow any change over time.

Frequently asked questions
One arm is more swollen than the other: is the scan useful?
Yes, swelling (oedema) of one arm is one of the indications. The scan looks for deep vein thrombosis, a thrombus (clot) in a deep vein: with compression ultrasound a normal vein flattens under the probe, a thrombosed vein does not. If the swelling came on suddenly, with pain, contact your doctor straight away.
Is it also done for a dialysis fistula?
Yes. A haemodialysis arteriovenous fistula is a surgically created connection between an artery and a vein in the arm. Doppler ultrasound measures its flow volume (how much blood passes through it each minute) and looks for any stenosis, that is, narrowing.
Are needles or contrast dye used?
No. Only the probe is placed on the skin with a little gel: no injections, no contrast dye, no radiation.
How often should the check be repeated?
It depends on the findings and on each person’s situation: the report or your doctor will say. As it uses no radiation, it can be repeated as often as needed.
What is the difference between ultrasound and Doppler ultrasound?
Doppler ultrasound is an ultrasound that, in addition to the image of the vessels, shows the blood flow: its direction and speed. It helps to find narrowings, dilations or obstacles to blood flow.
Does it hurt?
No, ultrasound does not hurt. It is a painless exam: the probe glides over the skin with a little gel. In some cases the pressure of the probe may cause slight discomfort, for example on an area that is already inflamed, on a very full bladder or on a painful joint. In rare situations, such as appendicitis, the scan may be more uncomfortable, but these cases are rare and the pressure is adapted to what you can tolerate. If you feel pain, tell me: we stop straight away.
How long does an upper limb Doppler take?
Usually 15–20 minutes; a little longer if both veins and arteries, or both arms, are studied.
Should I remove creams or jewellery?
Yes: remove bracelets, rings and your watch from the arm to be examined and avoid creams on the skin on the day of the scan. Wear a top that lets you uncover the whole arm.
